Starring: Audie Murphy, Bill Mauldin, Andy Devine, Robert Easton, Douglas Dick and Tim Durant. Narrated by James Whitmore. Written by John Huston and Albert Band, based on “The Red Badge of Courage” 1895 novel by Stephen Crane. Directed by John Huston.

Based on Stephen Crane's classic novel, this is a story about a young recruit Henry Fleming (Audie Murphy) who faces the horrors of war. Fleming vacillates between wanting to fight and doubting his own courage. In midst of first bloody encounter, he runs away. After seeing the dead and wounded, a sense of shame leads him back to his unit, where he distinguishes himself in the next battle. Having overcome his fear of "the great Death" he knows he can face whatever comes.

The Red Badge of Courage is a sparse but faithful retelling of the story, incorporating narration from the text to move the plot forward. Audie Murphy, a hero of World War II, played the lead role of Henry Fleming. Other actors include cartoonist Bill Mauldin, Andy Devine, Arthur Hunnicutt and Royal Dano. This movie was directed by the legendary John Huston who insisted over the protests of studio executives that Murphy play the lead role. This is one of his finest performances.

"A brilliant emotional drama, a memorable war saga...It's a wonderful example of modern film art." - The New York Mirror.

"The Red Badge of Courage bids fair to become one of the classic American motion pictures." - Newsweek
